How to Sow and Plant

Though the product offers seeds, note that horseradish is most reliably grown from root “sets” or cuttings; seeds often take longer and may not reliably reproduce true-to-type.
Sow seeds (or root sets) directly outdoors when soil is workable (early spring or late winter) in a deep, well-prepared bed.
Prepare soil by digging deeply (8–10 inches / 20–25 cm) and removing stones; soil should be fertile and loosened.
If using seeds: sow thinly and transplant/ thin seedlings when big enough to give around 35–50 cm space per plant.
If using root sets (recommended): plant cuttings 2–3 inches (5–7 cm) deep (or at slight angle), flat-cut end up.

How to Grow

Place in full sun (or partial shade) — horseradish grows best with ample light.
Keep soil moist but well-drained; avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
Ensure soil is deep, loose, fertile, and rich in organic matter, because root needs room to develop.
Weed control is important especially early in growth; mulch around plants helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvest roots typically in autumn or winter, once leaves die back or after first frost — this is when roots develop good flavour.

Tips

Because horseradish spreads aggressively, grow it in a dedicated bed or large container to prevent it spreading unchecked.
For best root quality, weed thoroughly and mulch to keep soil cool and moist.
If you plant via root cuttings, leave one or two shoots initially to allow the main root to focus on development, then remove excess sprouts for larger roots.
Avoid planting horseradish near other leafy vegetables that might get crowded — give it space due to its spreading root habit.

Vegetable

Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is a hardy perennial root-vegetable valued for its strongly flavored white root — widely used as a spice or condiment. It grows vigorously and can become invasive if planted directly in open soil, because the root system spreads underground. The plant produces large leafy growth and, in summer, clusters of small white flowers. When grown properly in deep, fertile soil and given room to expand, horseradish can provide a reliable source of spicy root year after year. For many gardeners, it’s a valuable addition because once established, it requires minimal maintenance.
