How to Sow and Plant

Prepare a nutrient-rich substrate / compost (e.g. decomposed straw, manure, manure + straw mix) or use a pre-prepared mushroom grow kit.
Spread the spawn evenly over the surface of the substrate. Do not bury deeply — a thin, even layer is enough.
Maintain cool temperature (~12–18 °C or 55–65 °F) and high humidity (85–95%); cover trays or beds to help retain moisture; ensure good ventilation to avoid contamination.
Once mycelium has colonized the substrate (typically 10–15 days), apply a casing layer (peat / moist soil / vermiculite-based) about 3–4 cm thick to aid fruiting.
Maintain moisture by misting or gentle watering (avoid waterlogging), keep environment dark or in low-light, and wait — mushrooms should begin to appear in ~2–4 weeks.

How to Grow

Keep substrate moist and humid, with periodic misting; avoid drying out.
Maintain cool, stable temperature — avoid heat spikes; ideal around 15–24 °C (some spawn prefer 13–18 °C).
Provide good ventilation but avoid direct sunshine; grow in dark or shaded area.
Use clean, sterilized substrate / tools to prevent contamination with molds or bacteria.

Tips

Grow indoors (tray/box/substrate bag) if outdoor climate is too warm — mushrooms prefer cool, stable temperatures.
Maintain high humidity and cleanliness — this is critical for fungal health and to avoid contamination.
Harvest mushrooms when caps are compact and white (button stage) — before gills open for best shelf-life and texture.
After first flush, you can often get multiple flushes with proper care (moisture, casing, environment).

Edible fungus

White Button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) is among the most commonly consumed mushrooms worldwide — prized for its mild flavour, soft texture, and versatility in cooking. Unlike traditional vegetables, they grow from fungal spawn rather than seeds and require a substrate — compost or manure-based growing medium, not garden soil. They prefer cool, humid, dark (or low-light) conditions rather than sunlight, making them ideal for indoor cultivation or specially prepared mushroom beds. With the right conditions (humidity 80–90%, cool temperature, good ventilation, sterilized substrate) they fruit in just a few weeks. For home gardeners, this makes them a sustainable, space-efficient way to produce fresh mushrooms year-round.
